Solar district heating potential of small towns in Europe
Most small European towns connected to a district heating network have enough land available for a solar field to meet 20 % of heat demand. In all, 93 % of the identified solar heat potential can be produced at a price of less than 50 EUR/MWh. These are the key findings from a study by PlanEnergi, a Danish consultancy. Its authors analysed maps showing 2,480 district heating networks in 22 countries that have no means of using waste heat for the task.

Levelised Cost of Heat and the Calculations behind It
The main objective of IEA SHC Task 52, Solar Thermal in Energy Supply Systems in Urban Environments, is to call attention to both the technical and economic aspects of solar heating and cooling usage in densely populated urban areas. Urban planners and commercial clients want to know the costs compared to the energy output generated by various solar heating technologies.

IEA SHC Task 52: Seeking Cost-Optimised Urban Energy Systems
It should come as no surprise that Denmark with its large and standardised systems has the lowest costs per installed m2 of collector area. Specific costs for Danish systems including short-term storages range from 204 to 263 EUR/m2.
